Oxygen Limitation

In large-scale and intensive culture systems, effective aeration of the culture is a major difficulty. Thus, oxygen limitation is often the major limiting factor determining maximum cell number. Studies by Mercille and Massie (92) demonstrated that deprivation of oxygen can induce apop-tosis. Subsequently, it has been shown that Bcl-2 overexpression protects hybridoma (8) and Burkitt's lymphoma cells (80) from apoptosis. Clearly this will provide the cells with a considerable advantage in oxygen-limited intensive culture systems.
