Miscellaneous Hydrogenations

Apart from refining, RD also finds application in hydrogenation to synthesize various fine and other petrochemicals. As mentioned earlier, hydrogenation of iso-phorone to trimethyl cyclohexanone has been conducted in an RD column, as the later has a lower boiling point. The advantage is the better control over temperature of this exothermic reaction [70]. Hydrogenation of anthraquinone, as a key step to produce hydrogen peroxide is also an interesting application of RD [62]. CDTech has developed a technology for production of methyl isobutyl ketone by hydrogenation of mesityl oxide in RD column. The process uses acetone and hydrogen as feedstock [66].
