Since the ion exchange resins are synthetic organic compounds, they are susceptible to decomposition reactions with strong oxidizing agents, such as nitric acid. Close control of reactant or regenerant concentrations, temperature, and contact time may be required.

When the treated solution is to be used as food, food additives, or in pharmaceutical applications, resins must be used which are acceptable for such processing.
