Significant axial temperature profiles can be expected, both in the substrate bed and in the headspace, even at small scale (Fig. 23.9). Although detailed studies have not been undertaken, air temperature differences between the air inlet and air outlet can be as high as 4°C, over a bioreactor length of 0.85 m (Mitchell et al. 2002a). The model predicts axial temperature gradients of this magnitude.
